Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her administration will not renew relations with Ecuador as long as Daniel Noboa, who recently won the elections in the South American country, remains in office as president.

Sheinbaum made the statement during her morning press conference at the National Palace, where she was emphatic in stating that there are no relations with Ecuador and there will be no relations with Ecuador as long as Noboa is in office, as he was responsible for the invasion of the Mexican embassy on April 5, 2024.

“To begin with, we do not have relations with Ecuador, nor will we have relations with Ecuador as long as Noboa is president, because he was responsible for the invasion of the Mexican embassy, the violation of our sovereignty. Therefore, relations will not be resumed,” she declared.

Sheinbaum stressed that victory of Noboa, who won a second term on April 13 as president of Ecuador, is “questionable,” and even the Organization of American States (OAS) has indicated that the race against his leftist opponent, Luisa González, was not fair.

“The OAS says Noboa did win, but that the race was not fair, and several international observers… moreover, his victory was very dubious, particularly as recognized by the OAS itself, which is not even another international body, and the other candidate is saying that there was fraud,“ said President Sheinbaum.

“For our part, relations with Ecuador will not be resumed,” she said.

On the night of Friday, April 5, Ecuadoran President Daniel Noboa ordered the assault on the Mexican embassy to arrest former Ecuadoran Vice President Jorge Glas Espinel, who had been sheltered in the Mexican mission in Quito since December 17. The embassy invasion was in violation of important international norms.
