Cultural tourism in Mexico experienced significant growth during the first half of 2025, with increased numbers of visitors to both museums and archaeological sites across the country, according to the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).

Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, head of Sectur, reported that from January to June of this year, Mexico’s museums welcomed 6 million visitors—an increase of 22.2% compared to the same period in 2024, and 3.9% above 2019 pre-pandemic levels.

According to data from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), 89% of museum visitors were domestic tourists, while 11% were international. The most visited venues were the National Museum of Anthropology, the National History Museum, and the Templo Mayor Museum, which together received 4.3 million visits.

Rodríguez Zamora also highlighted growth in visits to archaeological sites, which received 5.1 million visitors in the first half of 2025—a 3.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Of these, 61% were Mexican visitors and 39% were foreign tourists.

The most visited archaeological sites from January to June 2025 were Chichén Itzá with 1.1 million visitors, Teotihuacán (including its Site Museum) with 840,000, and Tulum with 628,000 visitors.

Sectur reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Mexico’s cultural heritage as a cornerstone of its tourism strategy, highlighting the historical, cultural, and educational value of these iconic destinations.
