Macabro: The Mexican international horror film festival that invites us to face our fears

The acclaimed international horror film festival, Macabro, is celebrating its 24th edition, screening films from 24 different countries for all fans of the genre.

This year, the festival is called “Hotel Macabro” and will be held from August 19 to 31 at various venues in Mexico City.

From the United States, Canada, Colombia, Belgium, Japan, Hotel Macabre gladly opens its doors to host all the films that unite us in the horror genre and create international ties with stories that, although distant, invite us to confront fears and monsters from other cultures.

Edna Campos, founder and director of the festival, shared in an interview with Mexican Press Agency (MxPA) that this year there will be a tribute to American writer Richard Matheson, best known as the author of “I Am Legend”, a horror and science fiction work that has already been adapted three times for the big screen.

The event director told us that three of this writer’s films will be screened, along with a talk with his son, R.C. Mathison, and Mexican writer Sandra Becerril, which will be broadcast on Macabro’s YouTube channel.

This festival is an opportunity to showcase the talent and creations of Mexican filmmakers to the world. To celebrate them, the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) will exhibit a retrospective featuring 30 works by outstanding students. This exhibition also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the training institution and will visit various states: Guanajuato, Puebla, Oaxaca, and the State of Mexico, among others.

It was also announced that this year, Macabro and Wikimedia are teaming up to hold “Edit-A-Thons,” which seek to create and edit Wikipedia articles with the intention of preserving and documenting the work of Mexican horror cinema and all the event’s participants.

Edna also took the opportunity to invite the international public to visit Mexico City and enjoy this horror film festival. She also told MxPA that, aside from the American guests who come to share their works, there are many others who come for the simple pleasure of visiting our country and sharing Mexican scares and works in the nation’s capital.
