Cuernavaca, Morelos, January 8, 2026.— Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted that intentional homicides decreased 40 percent from September 2024 to December 2025, with the numbers of victims declining from a daily average of 86.9 to 52.4, which represents 34 fewer homicides per day and places December 2025 as the lowest month for this crime since 2015.

“This is the result of a Security Strategy that is delivering results and of very close coordination among all public security, justice, and law enforcement agencies, as well as with state governors,” she emphasized during the morning presidential press conference known as the Mañanera, held today in Cuernavaca, Morelos.

Sheinbaum acknowledged the commitment of the agencies that comprise the Security Cabinet, as well as state governors, to maintain coordination. She explained that in 2026 the four pillars of the National Security Strategy will continue to be strengthened: 1. Addressing root causes of crime, so that no young person turns to criminal groups; 2. Consolidation of the National Guard; 3. Strengthening intelligence and investigation; and 4. Coordination with state governments.

The President reported that one of the major goals for this year is to significantly reduce extortions. She added that the monthly downward trend in intentional homicides and other crimes will continue.

Marcela Figueroa Franco, Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, explained that the national daily average of intentional homicides per year decreased by 30 percent between 2024 and 2025, making 2025 the lowest year since 2015.

She reported that from January to December 2025, seven states accounted for 50.5 percent of all intentional homicides: Guanajuato with 10.9 percent; Chihuahua with 7.7 percent; Baja California with 7.3 percent; Sinaloa with 7.1 percent; State of Mexico with 6.5 percent; Guerrero with 5.6 percent; and Michoacán with 5.4 percent. From 2024 to 2025, 26 states reduced their daily averages, with notable decreases in Zacatecas, at -71.1 percent; Chiapas, -58.6 percent; Quintana Roo, -56.8 percent; San Luis Potosí, -53.3 percent; and Nuevo León, -52.7 percent.

Furthermore, compared with February 2025, Guanajuato posted a 62 percent reduction. Compared with September 2024, the intentional homicide rate fell 42 percent in Baja California; 54% in the State of Mexico, and 72 percent in Nuevo Leon. When compared with October 2024, the decline in Guerrero was 65 percent; compared with February 2024, Tabasco’s intentional homicide numbers fell75 percent; and when compared with June 2025, Sinaloa saw its figures decreased 43 percent.

Sheinbaum added that from January 2018 to December of last year, the national annual average number of high-impact crimes fell 47 percent and the monthly average decreased 26 percent compared with October 2024. She emphasized that in the case of Morelos, the daily average number of intentional homicides from 2024 to 2025 dropped 26 percent, while high-impact crimes decreased 2.4 percent.

Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Omar GarcĂ­a Harfuch reported that from October 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, some 40,735 suspects have been arrested for high-impact crimes. In the same period, more than 21,000 firearms have been seized; more than 318 tons of drugs have been confiscated, including over 4 million fentanyl pills; and 1,887 labs and storage facilities were dismantled.

Harfuch Garcia added that as part of collaborative work, in Morelos, from October 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, some 659 suspects have been arrested, and 459 firearms seized, 959 kilos of drugs confiscated; and four labs have been dismantled.

Through the National Anti-Extortion Strategy, from July 6 to December 28, 2025, some 721 extortionists were arrested in 24 states, and 119,864 calls were received at the 089 tipline. Of them, 90,442 corresponded to attempted extortions thwarted thanks to real-time guidance; 16,570 were to present criminal reports; and 12,852 involved reports of completed extortions, which were forwarded to local prosecutors’ offices, resulting in 4,350 investigation files.

Minister of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez reported that as part of the “Attention to Root Causes” pillar, 4,818,548 services were provided to 3,133,390 people; 279,939 homes were visited; 409 Peace Fairs were held; 344 Peace Committees were formed; 7,005 Peace Days carried out; and 308 public spaces were recovered. She added that from October 1, 2024, to December 29, 2025, under the program Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace, 9,081 firearms were exchanged—2,642 rifles, 5,297 handguns, and 1,142 grenades—and 7,749 war toys were exchanged for educational items.

Morelos Governor Margarita Sánchez Saravia thanked the President for her visit to the state to jointly review progress in the security strategy, which she emphasized provides direction to the states.
