Last Tuesday, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, held a phone conversation in which they discussed trade and multilateralism issues.

The exchange took place in the context of the entry into force of U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on all foreign goods, a clear violation of the free trade agreement governing the commercial relationship between Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

“I appreciate the call with President Gabriel Boric. Our relationship with the people of Chile and their government is historical; we are strengthening the relationship between both nations,” Sheinbaum posted on her X account.

Although there has been no official and detailed information on what was discussed during the exchange, Boric’s message indicated a conversation about sovereignty and trade.

“A few minutes ago, I spoke with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, with whom we share positions on principles related to the defense of democracy and human rights, especially in current contexts, where we see these values constantly threatened.

We are strengthening cooperation to jointly address these and other global and regional challenges, such as trade and multilateralism, which today are being questioned from unilateral viewpoints,” Boric posted on X.

A few hours after the tariffs came into effect, the Mexican president called for a mass assembly on Sunday, March 9, in Mexico City’s Zócalo, the country’s main public square, to announce the actions the government will take in response to President Trump’s unilateral decision to impose the tariffs.
