President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated her commitment to the Mexican people, affirming, “We are going to do what is in Mexico’s best interest and pursue open dialogue with the United States.” She further shared during her morning press conference on Friday, “So far, I have to give President Trump credit, he has been very respectful of the president and of Mexico.”
Sheinbaum stated that she is coordinating with the United States on issues regarding security and migration, always in the spirit of mutual respect and collaboration: “There has been a relationship of respect, of open dialogue, and we want it to continue that way, and we are going to do everything in our power to ensure that it does while functioning within the best interest of Mexico.”
She emphasized that during the talks held so far with the U.S. government, both parties shared the perspective that the economies of both nations are “better together, allowing them to better compete with other regions of the world.”
She added that both countries want to strengthen their economies, and the best way to do this is to maintain cooperation without tariffs.
She further stated that through Plan Mexico, the country seeks to produce more domestically, and in turn import less. Therefore, the question is whether the two countries can do this together, or must operate separately.
“And the answer is: we must continue to do it together because we have a highly integrated economy.”
Additionally, President Trump made his official selection of Ronald Johnson to replace Ken Salazar as ambassador to Mexico. Johnson appeared before the US Senate earlier this week where he stated that military intervention could be considered: “Everything is on the table.”
In response, the Mexican president said that she does not agree with Johnson: “He said ‘everything is on the table.’ Well, that is not on the table, nor on the chair, nor on the floor, nor anywhere. Not that. We collaborate on a basis of respect.”
