President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that she proposed to her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, a comprehensive agreement covering migration, security, and trade.
The proposal was made during a phone call between the two leaders as part of the G7 Leaders Summit.
“We’ve reached many agreements; today we have a safer border. There is an agreement in terms of security, which was practically the first agreement signed in Washington. There has been a significant decrease in migration through Mexico, and I proposed, why don’t we establish a general agreement that includes security, migration, and trade?” the President said.
She indicated that Trump agreed with the proposal. As part of the follow-up, on Friday, Minister of Economy Marcelo Ebrard will travel to the United States to meet again with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick to advance on pending issues.
“And in the case of security and migration —in which we want to include Mexican families in the United States— that would be addressed with the State Department,” she added.
Sheinbaum emphasized that the conversation with President Trump was positive and lasted around 20 minutes, during which time she reiterated the importance of Mexicans living in the United States.
“I mentioned the importance of recognizing Mexicans in the United States, families that have lived there for years and contribute to the country. He acknowledged these families when I brought it up and said, ‘That’s true, there are many Mexican families who work for the good of our country,’” she noted.
It’s worth recalling that presidents Sheinbaum and Trump had scheduled a bilateral meeting during the G7 Summit. However, the U.S. president left the event early due to the tense situation in the Middle East.
