The governments of Mexico and the United States have reached an agreement regarding water sharing from the Rio Grande, in accordance with the 1944 Treaty.

They agreed to implement a series of measures to mitigate the potential shortfall in Mexico’s water deliveries toward the end of the cycle, including immediate water transfers as well as during the upcoming rainy season.

In this regard, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins confirmed that starting this Monday, April 28, Mexico would increase its water supply to Texas to help offset a deficit, according to the treaty, which defines the water sharing between the two countries.

For its part, the Mexican government stated that the decision was made “with the firm desire to continue fulfilling its commitments under the 1944 Treaty, which has been of great benefit to the development of the country’s northern border.”
