During an extremely difficult time for Mexicans in the United States, various artists and actors have spoken out to encourage their fellow Mexicans. This Monday, award-winning director Guillermo del Toro shared a message urging Mexicans to stay informed and know their rights.
“Fear is confronted with information,” Del Toro said on the social media channels of the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles. He urged Mexicans to contact their consulates and the Center for Information and Assistance to Mexicans (CIAM) at 520-623-7874.
“Knowing your rights, being informed and supporting your community gives you power,” said the Mexican director, encouraging migrants who face uncertain times with raids by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” wasn’t the only Mexican to speak out against Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant measures. Diego Luna, actor and member of the cast of “Andor: A Star Wars Story”, also spoke out.
During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this Monday, the “charolastra” described the US president’s anti-immigrant measures as “authoritarian.”
“Today, many people feel persecuted. Far too many people live in fear–fear of taking their kids to school or going to places where they earn an honest living,” Luna said directly to the camera. He also noted that undocumented immigrants contributed nearly $100 billion in taxes to the United States in 2022.
The renowned Hollywood actor ended by asking American citizens to contact their representatives at (202) – 224 – 3121 to let them know that violence and terror are not normal in this country that depends so much on immigrants.
Thus, these two talented Mexicans called for action from their established position in Hollywood. Del Toro, with the support of the Mexican government, urges Mexicans not to succumb to fear and despair, and to remain calm and face challenges with the support of Mexican institutions that are there to support their fellow citizens.
For his part, Diego Luna urges American citizens to combat terror, hatred, and authoritarianism. This is a wake-up call for Americans to know that what is happening is not normal, and that the violence of separating families and persecuting immigrants is unacceptable.
