The Security Cabinet reports that as a result of the constant patrols at sea, in an action led by personnel from the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), through Mexican Navy operations as part of its coast guard duties, and in coordination with the Ministry of National Defense (Defensa), the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the National Guard (GN), and the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), approximately 4,500 kilograms of cocaine and 1,700 liters of fuel were seized on the Mexican Pacific coast and four suspects were arrested.
During maritime and air surveillance patrols for the maintenance of the rule of law, with the support of vessels and air units of the Mexican Navy; 56 nautical miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, naval personnel identified a small vessel with three outboard motors and four crew members on board. Upon noticing the presence of the authorities, the crew attempted to flee the scene and in order to rule out any illegal conduct, the vessel was stopped and a security inspection was carried out.
On board the vessel, 150 sacks were found with 30 packages each, containing white powder with characteristics of cocaine, equivalent to 9 million doses, in addition to 18 drums of 50 liters each, approximately 900 liters of fuel, and a cubitank with 800 liters of hydrocarbons.
As a result, the four suspects were detained, informed of their constitutional rights and, together with the seized drugs, were handed over to the corresponding Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will complete the investigation and determine their legal status.
The cost of the seized drugs is almost 1.07 billion pesos (USD$53.74 million) With this seizure, 31 tons of drugs have been seized at sea thus far during the current administration.
These actions are part of the maritime, air, and land monitoring operations carried out by the Ministry of the Navy and the institutions comprising the Security Cabinet, with the aim of curbing criminal actions and maintaining the rule of law in Mexico.
