This Tuesday, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela will visit Mexico to strengthen cooperation on clean energy, sustainable transportation, circular economy and green finance.

The visit is in the framework of the European Union-Mexico Global Gateway Investment Agenda (GGIA), Plan Mexico, and the future modernized Global Agreement between the EU and Mexico.

Prior to his visit (which will last until October 16), Commissioner Síkela explained that the EU and Mexico are taking their partnership to a new level, through Global Gateway.

“Europe and Mexico are natural partners. We share a vision of sustainable and inclusive development. Through Global Gateway we are transforming that shared vision into concrete investments in clean energy, sustainable mobility and circular economy value chains,” he added.

From cooperation to concrete results

The Commissioner’s visit will have two main components.

In Quintana Roo, he will visit the ARM Natans, a Mexican Navy vessel that collects sargassum, an algae that threatens coastal ecosystems and local livelihoods.

Together with national and local authorities, as well as private sector partners, Síkela will explore how sargassum can become an economic resource transformed into renewable and sustainable bioproducts capable of generating green jobs and circular value chains in Mexico and the Caribbean.

This initiative builds on the momentum generated by the Global Gateway Forum (Brussels, October 9-10), which brought together governments, international financial institutions, and business leaders to boost sustainable investment around the world.

Expanding the strategic dialogue

While in Mexico City, Commissioner Síkela will meet with senior officials and representatives of the business sector before inaugurating the 6th EU-Mexico Forum (October 16-17), under the slogan “Common Opportunities and Challenges: Strengthening our Economic and Political Partnership through Inclusion and Sustainability”.

Organized by the European Union and the Euroamerica Foundation, the Forum will bring together policymakers, investors, business leaders and opinion makers from both regions to explore new areas of collaboration, including renewable energy, sustainable mobility (including rail transportation), circular economy, healthcare, and green finance.
