Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo called on Monday for an end to the genocide in Gaza and announced that Mexico will deliver a message of peace to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will hold its 80th session from September 23 to 29 in New York.
During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum confirmed that Minister of Foreign Relations Juan Ramón de la Fuente, who will lead the Mexican delegation in the high-level debates, will deliver the country’s position.
“The Foreign Minister is carrying a message of peace. We want the genocide in Gaza to end. There cannot be aggression against the civilian population,” the President stated.
Sheinbaum emphasized that, for the first time, a Mexican government has granted full diplomatic recognition to a Palestinian ambassador.
“Before, there were only diplomatic representatives. This is the first time a president has received the credentials of the State of Palestine and officially recognized its ambassador,” she explained.
The President recalled that since the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico has supported international juridical initiatives regarding the situation in Gaza and has consistently condemned attacks on civilians.
Mexico’s position before the UN, she reiterated, remains consistent with its long-standing foreign policy principles: “Stop the genocide; and as a State, we will always seek peace, non-intervention, and the self-determination of peoples.”
Mexico’s intervention at the UN General Assembly comes amid growing international calls for a ceasefire and stronger protection of civilians in Gaza, where humanitarian agencies warn of the most severe crisis in decades.
