As part of the fight against racism, discrimination and machismo, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, proposed that a portion of the global investment in arms should be used to ensure justice and education for girls as a means to promote peace and equality.
This was stated by the president as she headed to the First World Conference of Women Parliamentarians, which took place at the National Palace, where she assured that the political vindication of women can only be built with social justice.
“Social justice belongs to women or it will never be social justice. If only a little of what is invested in weapons worldwide is dedicated to peace, to the fight against racism, discrimination and machismo, to justice, and the right to education for girls everywhere in the world. In this way we can become women for peace, justice and equality,” she said.
During the conference, Sheinbaum shared that Mexico is an example of gender parity around the world, not only because half of the Congress of the Union and state congresses are made up of women, but also because as of September, gender parity will be guaranteed in the composition of the Judiciary.
“The people of Mexico decided to make a constitutional reform, we are the first country that will elect the entire Judiciary by popular vote and this profound transformation shows how democratic our country is, because democracy is the power of the people, by the people and for the people,” expressed Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum detailed that, in this reform, it was established that of the nine members that will be part of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, five will be women, creating gender parity in the Judiciary.
“We know that [gender] parity is possible, we have seen it here in Mexico. We have seen that [gender] parity is becoming the norm,” said Tulia Ackson, president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The first World Conference of Women Parliamentarians was attended by 350 women legislators from around the world, representing 62 countries.
