President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo declared that the Mexican Government has sufficient funds allocated to its consulates to support the country’s migrants in the United States, following the detention of 23 Mexican nationals during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Georgia on September 5.

Of those detained, 13 requested consular assistance while 10 did not. Sheinbaum stressed that the Mexican government is prepared to assist anyone who requires it.

“There will be no shortage of resources for the consulates. This is how we have been working so far. If they need more budgetary resources, more budgetary resources will be sent. There will be no shortage of support for our migrant brothers and sisters,” she stated during her morning press conference on September 8.

The President recalled that any Mexican detained in United States has the right to request consular assistance, though not all do so due to lack of awareness.

To address these cases, she explained that the Mexican Consular Support Line operates 24/7, with the number 520 623 7874 available from within the U.S. and 079 from Mexico.

Sheinbaum explained that each consulate has instructions to act immediately, requesting information from U.S. institutions and from the Mexican embassy. Consular representatives then visit detention centers to establish contact with detainees and their families.

The President also reported that 19 Mexican nationals are still being detained in Florida, in a facility known as Alcatraz of the Caymans. She emphasized that the Mexican government is closely monitoring these cases to ensure the defense and protection of migrants’ rights.

With this message, Sheinbaum reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to safeguard Mexicans abroad, particularly those in situations of vulnerability.
