The U.S. newspaper The New York Times has included Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on its list of the 67 Most Stylish People of 2025, highlighting the way she blends sophisticated silhouettes with Indigenous embroidery and traditional Mexican textiles.
The annual selection recognizes figures from music, sports, film, fashion and other fields whose public presence stands out for the way they express themselves through image. According to the NY Times, style is not limited to clothing, but also encompasses attitude, authenticity and the ability to craft a distinctive visual identity.
Vanessa Friedman, the newspaper’s fashion director, explained her choice:
“My pick this year was Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, because of the way she mixes established sophisticated silhouettes with Indigenous embroidery and Mexican textiles to promote inclusivity and the country itself to the world.”

On its website, the NY Times notes that Sheinbaum has brought attention to Indigenous Mexican fashion during her first year in office by wearing embroidered garments and speaking out against major brands accused of cultural appropriation. The article recalls the controversy this past August, when Adidas apologized in response to accusations concerning designer Willy Chavarría’s Oaxaca Slip-On, a shoe he said was meant to honor Mexican American culture.
At the time, Sheinbaum displayed the shoe during her “Mañanera del Pueblo” morning press conference and accused Adidas and other companies of “usurping the creativity” of Indigenous communities.
Other figures included on the list are Rosalía, praised for her distinctive aesthetics; tennis player Carlos Alcaraz; singer Bad Bunny, known for bending cultural and fashion norms; and Lisa of BLACKPINK, recognized for her global influence in both fashion and pop culture.
With this recognition, President Sheinbaum joins a group of global personalities whose style, presence and visual identity shaped the year.
