With the 2025 summer vacation season underway, Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) have launched the campaign “Evita fraudes y viaja con tranquilidad (Avoid Scams and Travel with Peace of Mind),” aimed at protecting tourists from frauds when purchasing travel services.

During the campaign’s presentation, Minister of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora and Federal Consumer Prosecutor Iván Escalante Ruiz urged the public to consult the National Tourism Registry (RNT) and the Profeco Commercial Bureau before booking flights, hotels, tours, or services from travel agencies—whether physical or online.

“Often these scams come from phantom agencies offering deals that are too good to be true. Travelers should verify that agencies are registered with the RNT, a public and free tool that provides certainty to consumers,” Rodríguez Zamora explained.

Among the main recommendations from both institutions are:

• Avoid booking with unregistered travel agencies.
• Ensure that prices are clearly displayed and in Mexican pesos.
• Check for complaints on Profeco’s Commercial Bureau platform.
• Plan expenses, bookings, and travel documents in advance.
• Have vehicles checked by a mechanic if traveling by road.

According to Sectur, more than 48 million tourists are expected to travel across the country this summer, generating an estimated 818.2 billion pesos (US$43.62 billion) in revenue. In light of this high consumption, authorities aim to shield travelers from misleading or fraudulent practices.

Rodríguez Zamora reminded the public that in case of non-compliance by service providers, tourists may visit any of the 38 Consumer Defense Offices (Odeco) across the country, call the Consumer Hotline (55 5568 8722 or 800 468 8722), or report suspicious websites via the official National Guard site: https://www.gob.mx/gncertmx.

Prosecutor Iván Escalante emphasized the importance of consumers knowing their basic rights: access to information, education, freedom of choice, safety and quality, non-discrimination, compensation, and protection.

“Consumer protection doesn’t go on vacation. We encourage the public to stay informed and reach out to us if they experience any irregularities,” Escalante concluded.

Both agencies invited travelers to follow their official social media accounts for more tips and recommendations to enjoy a safe and scam-free summer vacation.
