The President of Mexico emphasized that the decrease is the result of implementing the four pillars of the National Security Strategy: Addressing the root causes of crime; consolidation of the National Guard; strengthening intelligence and investigative work; and coordination among public security institutions.

The daily average number of victims of intentional homicides in September 2024 was 86.9, while in July 2025 it was 64.9 — making it the lowest July figure since 2015.

As part of the National Anti-Extortion Strategy, 132 extortionists have been arrested, and from July 6 to August 6, some 18,239 calls made to the 089 national crime-reporting hotline have been handled.

The Government of Mexico, through the Security Cabinet, reported that the implementation of the National Security Strategy during the first 10 months of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s administration has reduced the daily average number of intentional homicide victims by 25.3% from September 2024 to July 2025, representing 22 fewer homicides per day.

President Sheinbaum emphasized that the 25.3% decrease is the result of implementing the four pillars of the National Security Strategy: addressing the causes of crime; consolidating the National Guard; strengthening intelligence and investigative work; and coordinating among public security institutions.

“In 10 months, there has been a 25.3% reduction in intentional homicide victims, which means 22 fewer homicides per day — 22 fewer in July than in September. Of course, we must continue working; this is a very important result that is part of the ongoing coordination we have in place. The strategy works, and we must continue working every day. Naturally, the opposition, our adversaries, will never agree or acknowledge the result — never. What we want is to continue delivering results for the people of Mexico,” she stated during the morning presidential press conference, known as “The People’s Mañanera.”

Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, explained that with the 25.3% reduction, the daily average number of intentional homicide victims in September 2024 was 86.9, while in July 2025 it was 64.9. In addition, July of this year had the fewest recorded homicides compared to any July since 2015.

She also noted that from September 2024 to July 2025, 23 states saw a decrease in intentional homicides, particularly:

Guanajuato: beginning in March, a -60.7% reduction, from 12.71 daily in February to 5 in July.

State of Mexico: a -45% reduction, from 6.63 to 3.65 homicides daily.

Nuevo León: a -72.9% reduction , from 5 to 1.35 homicides daily.

Baja California: a -35.8% reduction, from 7.14 to 4.58 homicides daily.

Tabasco: a -48.6% reduction, from 3.21 to 1.65 homicides daily.

Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch reported that as a result of the National Security Strategy, in the last three weeks — from July 18 to August 10, 2025 — 2,458 suspects have been arrested for high-impact crimes and 901 firearms were seized, 12 tons of drugs were confiscated, and 65 drug labs and storage facilities have been dismantled. From the start of the current administration on October 1 to August 10, over 29,000 suspects have been arrested for high-impact crimes, 14,943 firearms seized, and 216 tons of drugs confiscated — including 3.5 million fentanyl pills — and 1,262 methamphetamine production labs and storage facilities have been dismantled across 21 states.

In addition, as part of the National Anti-Extortion Strategy, from July 6 to August 6, 18,239 some calls to the 089 national reporting hotline were attended to, of which:

10,538 involved attempted (unsuccessful) extortions,

6,276 were reports of phone numbers used for extortion attempts, and

1,425 were reports of extortions that were consummated.

A total of 132 extortionists were arrested: 56 in Tabasco, 34 in the State of Mexico, 14 in Michoacán, and 11 in Guerrero.

Minister of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez reported that under the “Addressing the Root Causes” pillar of the National Security Strategy, slightly more than 3 million actions have been carried out through:

4,290 Peace Day events,

154,435 door-to-door visits,

249 Peace Fairs, and

264 Peace Committees.

Employment fairs have also been held, benefiting 16,157 job seekers; 685 facades have been painted and 176 public spaces recovered under the Safe Pathways program; and 35,297 families have benefited from the Wellbeing Market.

She added that under the Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace program, 5,087 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered in 29 states — 3,039 handguns, 1,429 rifles, and 519 grenades — as well as 4,844 war toys exchanged for recreational options.
