- 17 days after the strategy was launched, 40 extortionists have been arrested in Guerrero, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Puebla, the State of Mexico, and Tabasco.
- Anonymous reports can be made by calling 089 so that units specializing in this crime can begin their investigation.
The Mexican government, through the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported that, 17 days after the launching of the National Strategy against Extortion, 40 suspects have been arrested in the states of Guerrero, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Puebla, Mexico State, and Tabasco.
The National Strategy against Extortion is based on five pillars: 1. The use of emergency number 089 as a mechanism for reporting incidents; 2. Immediate cancellation of the telephone line used in extortions and providing guidance to the victim; 3. Filing of a complaint with state prosecutors and the creation of an investigative file in cases of in-person extortion; 4. Deployment of intelligence cells; 5. Investigation by the specialized unit against kidnapping and extortion.
At the morning press conference “Las mañaneras del pueblo” led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch highlighted that with the implementation of the National Strategy against Extortion, the presence of specialized units attending to this crime has increased, coordination with local authorities has been strengthened, and the emergency number 089 has been promoted for reporting incidents, which has already yielded results.
“What we are doing is working together with local prosecutors and state police, and this has already resulted in the arrest of almost 40 extortionists. Early this morning, three more arrests were reported in Michoacán, and this is the crime we are working on and giving priority to,” he said.
Harfuch García explained that of the 40 extortionists, two were arrested in Guerrero, four in Guanajuato, and nine in Michoacán as a result of anonymous reports made to the 089 emergency number, along with 14 in Tabasco, seven in the State of Mexico, and four in Puebla.
At the morning press conference, he also presented the results of the National Security Strategy, which in the last 15 days has led to the arrest of 784 suspects for high-impact crimes, the seizure of nearly 400 firearms and more than eight tons of drugs, and the dismantling of 28 clandestine methamphetamine laboratories.
During the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, from October 1, 2024, to July 17, 2025, more than 26,000 suspects have been arrested, 204 tons of drugs have been seized, including one and a half tons and more than 3.5 million fentanyl pills, as well as 14,000 weapons, and 1,193 clandestine laboratories have been dismantled in 21 states.
