Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) confirmed this Tuesday the release and repatriation of six Mexican nationals who had been detained in Israel after participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission bound for Gaza.
The Mexican citizens, identified as Sol González Eguía, Ernesto Ledesma Arronte, Arlín Medrano Guzmán, Carlos Pérez Osorio, Diego Vázquez Galindo, and Laura Alejandra Vélez Ruiz Gaitán, were transferred from Israel to Amman, Jordan, where they were received by the Mexican ambassador to Jordan, together with the Mexican ambassador to Israel, who will accompany them back to Mexico City.
In an official statement, the SRE expressed its gratitude for the support and cooperation of the Jordanian government, through which intensive diplomatic efforts were carried out to ensure the safe entry and transit of the six Mexican nationals in route to their repatriation.
“The Government of Mexico acknowledges the solidarity and cooperation of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, whose assistance was crucial in facilitating the return of our citizens,” the statement read.
The SRE added that it has maintained constant communication with the families of the repatriated activists and reaffirmed that its priority remains the safety, physical integrity, and well-being of all Mexicans abroad, particularly those located in conflict zones.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is an international initiative led by civil and humanitarian organizations seeking to deliver aid and raise awareness of the living conditions of civilians in Gaza, amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis resulting from armed conflict in the region.
According to international reports, Israeli authorities temporarily detained hundreds of participants in the flotilla, including citizens of various nationalities, after alleging that the convoy attempted to enter a restricted area without authorization.
Diplomatic sources confirmed that the six Mexican participants were part of the humanitarian delegation, whose goal was to document and denounce the conditions faced by the Palestinian population in Gaza, while advocating for adherence to international law and civilian protection.
The SRE stated that the release of the six Mexicans was achieved through close coordination between the country’s embassies in Israel and Jordan, as well as the work of the General Directorate for Consular Protection and the Information and Assistance Center for Mexican Nationals (CIAM).
Throughout the process, Mexican authorities monitored the conditions of detention and treatment received by its citizens, ensuring consular assistance in accordance with international human rights and diplomatic protection agreements.
The six are now in route to Mexico City, where they will be met by SRE officials and their families. Upon arrival, they will receive psychological, medical, and legal assistance if needed, the SRE indicated.
The Mexican Government reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of human rights and to upholding international humanitarian law, while calling on the global community to ensure the safety and respect of humanitarian missions operating in conflict areas.
