The Mexican Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, reported 17,258 arrests for high-impact crimes, since October 2024, the beginning of President Sheinbaum’s administration allowing the Mexican government to “dismantle criminal networks.”

Furthermore, during the daily presidential press conference, he detailed that more than 140 tons of drugs had been seized, in Sheinbaum’s first semester, including nearly 1.5 tons of fentanyl and over 2 million fentanyl pills. “To combat drug production, more than 750 clandestine laboratories and methamphetamine production areas have been dismantled in 17 states across the country. These destroyed laboratories represent millions of dollars in losses for criminal organizations and prevent millions of doses from reaching consumers,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, more than 9 thousand firearms have been removed from the streets, García Harfuch added. Many of the achievements presented in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s conferences have been possible thanks to the National Guard, a national security institution with over 130,000 members “integrated into the Secretariat of National Defense, which guarantees its stability, permanence, discipline, professionalism, and loyalty to Mexico,” he emphasized.

On another note, the Secretary detailed that the Secretariat of the Navy has strengthened its capabilities and increased operations in international waters, with nearly 28,500 actions on land, sea, and air over the past six months of the administration.

García Harfuch also highlighted that “the constitutional reforms proposed by the president were approved, granting investigative powers to the Secretariat of Security”, concluding that this has allowed complete coordination with the Attorney General’s Office and an expansion of the Secretariat’s legal and operational tools, to be more efficient for citizens.
