Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo held a phone conversation on Tuesday with U.S. President Donald Trump after he departed early from the G7 Summit, which was held in Kananaskis, Canada. His early departure led to the cancellation of a scheduled bilateral meeting with the Mexican leader.
“I had a very good phone call with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who informed me that he left yesterday due to an emergency related to the situation in the Middle East. We agreed to work together to reach agreements soon on various issues that currently concern us,” Sheinbaum wrote on her official X account.
The President emphasized that the conversation was positive and that both leaders reaffirmed their willingness to keep diplomatic channels open to ensure that progress is made on crucial topics such as migration, trade, security, and regional development.
The Mexican Ministry of the Interior had previously clarified that the meeting was not definitively canceled but merely postponed due to the U.S. president’s emergency departure.
“I am participating in the G7 Summit in Canada as the representative of a dignified and proud people who love their history and culture and who have always been promoters of peace,” Sheinbaum added on the same platform.
Key Bilateral Meetings
On the final day of the G7 summit, Sheinbaum held bilateral meetings with several international leaders. One of the most notable encounters was with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We are strengthening our relationship with India through investments aimed at scientific and technological development,” Sheinbaum said following the meeting.
Modi wrote that “I had a very good meeting with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. I personally congratulated her on her historic electoral victory, becoming the first woman president of Mexico in two centuries.”
“We both see immense potential for the ties between India and Mexico to grow even stronger in the future, particularly in areas such as agriculture, semiconductors, critical minerals, health, and more. We also discussed ways to deepen people-to-people ties,” he added.
Sheinbaum also reported that she had a conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “to strengthen friendship with Mexico and our trade relationship.”
The Mexican President also said she held a meeting with the newly elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung “to bring our countries closer and enrich the ties between our peoples.”
An Active Presence at the G7
Despite Trump’s absence on the final day, President Sheinbaum continued with her planned agenda at the international forum, which brings together the world’s leading economies.
The summit concludes today with a joint statement focused on climate change, energy transition, technological innovation, and current geopolitical challenges.
Sheinbaum attended the event as the leader of an invited country, accompanied by the heads of the Foreign Relations, Economy, Security, and Finance ministries, who have also held parallel meetings with their international counterparts.
The President reiterated that her participation is part of a foreign policy rooted in sovereignty, mutual respect, and international cooperation, aiming to position Mexico as an important global player.
