Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has been granted the Award Recipients prize by the Water Environment Federation (WEF). The award is an international recognition granted to public leaders whose initiatives have created lasting positive impacts in water management and environmental resilience.
The award, to be presented on September 29 at WEFTEC, the federation’s annual technical exhibition and conference in Chicago, highlights Sheinbaum’s pioneering efforts to set new standards in water resource management. Many of these initiatives were first developed during her tenure as Head of Government of Mexico City and have since been expanded in her presidential administration.
Among the projects praised by WEF are the modernization of 200,000 hectares of irrigation districts to promote more efficient water use in agriculture; the signing of the National Agreement for the Human Right to Water and Sustainability, which enabled the recovery of 3 billion cubic meters of water; and the expansion of potable water capacity by 1,658 liters per second to strengthen long-term supply resilience.
The federation also highlighted the planning of more than 17 strategic water projects nationwide aimed at ensuring universal access to water, along with Sheinbaum’s commitment to cleaning-up three of Mexico’s most polluted rivers: Santiago-Lerma, Tula, and Atoyac.
“This award represents the best of public service and recognizes leaders whose actions have a lasting positive impact on both people and the planet,” said Howard Carter, WEF President, when announcing the honor.
Carter emphasized that Sheinbaum’s water policy has successfully integrated technological innovation, citizen participation, and public-private collaboration, securing reliable supplies and driving investment in critical infrastructure.
With this award, Sheinbaum joins a distinguished group of international leaders recognized for their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, as Mexico positions itself as a global reference in integrated water management.
