In the morning press conference known as “The People’s Mañaneras”, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported on the progress of actions taken by the Mexican government in response to the emergency resulting from flooding caused by the torrential rainfall last week in Hidalgo, Veracruz, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí.
“Not only is attention being provided everywhere, but there is a plan in place and resources are available,” she emphasized.
So far, the Ministry of Well-Being has conducted a census that has reached 26,311 households in 58 municipalities across the five states: 17,120 in Veracruz; 4,796 in Puebla; 2,493 in San Luis Potosí; 1,221 in Hidalgo; and 681 in Querétaro.
At the same time, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) is preparing executive projects for the reconstruction of damaged bridges. In coordination with the ministries of National Defense and the Navy, SICT personnel continue opening roads with 1,000 machines. As a result, in the past 24 hours the number of isolated localities decreased from 191 to just 160.
In addition, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reported that as of 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, the restoration of electric power reached the 93 percent mark, benefiting 243,762 users in the five states. Work continues to restore service to an addition 19,700 residents, and 13,000 telephone and internet service cards have been distributed free of charge.
In the case of damaged schools, cleanup work has begun, and appraisals are underway by the state-owned insurance company Agroasemex S.A. to cover cleaning, dredging, replacement of furniture, equipment, and reconstruction where there is structural damage.
