The Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and Visa have signed a strategic collaboration agreement to strengthen the promotion of Mexico as an international tourist destination through an analysis of aggregate data on foreign visitor spending.
This alliance aims to position Mexico as a world-class destination, improve the tourist experience, and foster greater economic benefits by leveraging payment digitalization.
The agreement will enable both institutions to work together to harness information on the economic impact of international tourism, especially during key moments such as the FIFA World Cup 26, an event in which Mexico will be one of the host countries.
With 48 teams and 104 matches, this tournament is set to be the largest in FIFA history, and millions of visitors are expected to arrive in the country, generating significant economic spillover.
Visa, as the official payment services partner of the World Cup, will provide Sectur with valuable data derived from the analysis of digital transactions, facilitating improvements in visitor services and boosting tourism development across various Mexican destinations.
Minister of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora highlighted the importance of having clear and precise information to design more effective public policies that promote competitive, inclusive, and sustainable tourism.
“The World Cup represents a key moment to position Mexico on the international stage, and this agreement will allow us to maximize the benefits of this event in different destinations throughout the country,” she said.
Meanwhile, Francisco Valdivia, General Director of Visa in Mexico, pointed out that one of their goals is to strengthen economic opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities through access to digital payments.
“Tourism is a key sector, and the World Cup offers the ideal context for this collaboration. We want to help expand the benefits of tourism by maximizing its impact through technological tools and useful data,” he explained.
This agreement marks a long-term commitment between the public and private sectors to consolidate Mexico as a competitive, innovative, and sustainable tourist destination, leveraging technology and data to promote more strategic and beneficial development for the country.
