Mexico reaffirmed its position as a tourism powerhouse by receiving the award for Latin America’s Leading Destination at the Latin American World Travel Awards 2025, a ceremony held in Cancún, Quintana Roo, attended by industry leaders, authorities, business executives, and representatives of international destinations.
Deputy Secretary of Tourism Nathalie Desplas Puel, representing Minister Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, received the award and declared that “Mexico is in fashion”, recalling that the country is currently the second most visited destination in the Americas and the sixth worldwide, according to the UN Tourism agency.
For the Deputy Secretary, receiving a World Travel Award means far more than a trophy: it is confirmation that the nation’s tourism services are in constant innovation, backed by the cultural diversity and natural wealth that distinguish its 32 states.
“This recognition allows us to honor what makes us unique and to offer authentic experiences to those who visit us, especially to Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, who have preserved an ancestral and millenary culture,” she said.
Desplas emphasized that Mexico’s tourism offering covers all segments: from the ever-popular sun-and-beach destinations to adventure, romance, nature, wellness, rural, culinary, and business tourism. This versatility, she noted, has enabled the country to compete with world-class destinations.
According to the World Economic Forum, Mexico ranks first globally in natural resources and fifth in cultural resources, with a heritage that includes 36 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, placing the country first in the Americas and seventh worldwide in this category.
“Our country has so much to offer, but what truly makes it great is the hospitality and warmth of its people,” Desplas affirmed, stressing that every traveler finds not only destinations but also human experiences that inspire them to return.
In addition to the award as Latin America’s Leading Destination, the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) was recognized as Mexico & Central America’s Leading Tourist Board 2025.
Desplas dedicated this prize to the Ministry’s staff and highlighted the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in promoting a tourism policy focused on sustainability.
In this regard, she noted that the challenge for the country is to maintain tourism growth while prioritizing benefits for local communities, ensuring that the prosperity generated by the sector is distributed fairly.
“Today we are working to make tourism a driver of shared prosperity, where every community benefits from the multiplier effect of this generous sector,” she said.
Desplas concluded by stating that “winning a World Travel Award means being at the top of the industry, setting high standards of quality and service, and driving us to continue improving the experience of every traveler who sets foot in Mexico.”
