Sheinbaum Confirms Marco Rubio’s Visit to Mexico to Strengthen Bilateral Security Agreement

President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed this Friday that on September 3 she will host U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mexico, as part of a key meeting aimed at consolidating a new bilateral security agreement.
During her morning press conference on August 29, Sheinbaum explained that the meeting seeks to reinforce cooperation between the two countries in areas such as joint investigations, information sharing, training programs, and coordinated actions against organized crime, in a framework of respect for sovereignty, mutual trust, and shared responsibility.
“This is an agreement we have between the government of the United States and Mexico. It includes, for example, joint investigations into fentanyl precursors, how they enter Mexico, and other frameworks for collaboration and coordination, always within the framework of respect for our sovereignty,” the president said.
Sheinbaum emphasized that the agreement covers not only intelligence and security efforts but also prevention campaigns targeting youth on the effects of drug use. She also pointed out that cooperation will be strengthened to stop the flow of firearms from the United States into Mexico, an issue that has generated bilateral tensions in recent years.
The President also announced that she will take the opportunity of the Secretary of State’s visit to request information on the case of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the longstanding leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, who is currently under investigation in both countries.
With this visit, the federal government seeks to consolidate a new chapter in Mexico–U.S. security relations, at a time when shared challenges —particularly fentanyl trafficking and arms smuggling— remain at the forefront of the bilateral agenda.
