Maya Ka’an, Quintana Roo, has been recognized by National Geographic magazine as one of the world's best destinations to visit in 2027, with particular praise for its community-based tourism model, which places Maya communities at the center of tourism experiences, promotes nature conservation and helps preserve the region's cultural heritage.

The National Geographic feature highlights that Maya Ka’an is home to Maya indigenous communities that have protected their jungles and lagoon systems, and that offer experiences rooted in their traditions, gastronomy, crafts and ancestral knowledge.

Among the activities highlighted in the publication are embroidery workshops with Maya motifs in X-Pichil, tours with local producers in Señor, nature experiences at the Muyil lagoon and the mangroves of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, as well as cultural activities in Tihosuco and Chunhuhub.

In this regard, Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora stressed that Maya Ka’an's inclusion among the best destinations to visit in 2027 reaffirms the value of community tourism as a path to generating Shared Prosperity.

“Maya Ka’an shows that it is possible to offer authentic experiences, preserve our natural and cultural heritage and create opportunities for families. We want this model to grow stronger and reach more regions of the country, because tourism must translate into well-being and Shared Prosperity,” she said.

She also stressed that, as part of the strategy driven by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the Tourism Secretariat and the National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur), headed by Sebastián Ramírez Mendoza, are working to strengthen Community Tourism across the country through tools that make it possible to recognize these experiences, broaden their promotion and create opportunities for those who develop them.

“Maya Ka’an shows us that when communities are the protagonists, our identity is strengthened, our heritage is preserved and prosperity reaches families. That is the tourism we want for Mexico, a tourism with a human face and with Shared Prosperity,” she concluded.
