Mexico City Goes for a Guinness Record with the World's Largest Catrina

In Mexico City's autumn air you can already smell palo santo, freshly baked pan de muerto and cempasúchil flowers. Día de Muertos is approaching, and the capital's government is aiming to break a Guinness Record by installing the world's largest Catrina.

This year, the traditional mega ofrenda in the zócalo will pay tribute to the illustrator José Guadalupe Posada, creator of "la Garbancera," now better known as "La Catrina," so a 32-meter-tall cartonería sculpture of the figure will be the main attraction.

This sculpture aims to break a Guinness record and take the title from the 28.15-meter catrina that was installed in 2023 in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

Other cartonería sculptures made by Mexico City artists will accompany the monumental Catrina, along with sawdust carpets, axolotl sculptures, more than one hundred thousand cempasúchil flowers and special lighting projected onto the buildings surrounding the zócalo.

The giant catrina and the mega ofrenda can be visited from Thursday, October 29 through Tuesday, November 2 in the zócalo of Mexico City.

This would be the third Guinness record that Mexico City breaks under the administration of Clara Brugada this year, since in March the record for the world's largest soccer class was broken with 9,500 attendees, and in June the record for the world's largest human wave was broken with a span of 2 kilometers.
