President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo celebrated the election of Xavier Becerra as governor of California and Gina Hinojosa as governor of Texas, and stressed that both victories reflect the presence of Mexican-American people in U.S. political life.

When asked about the outcome of the midterm elections, Sheinbaum responded: "It shows a feeling of the American people."

She then highlighted the family and cultural ties of the two elected officials to Mexico and expressed her satisfaction at the political participation of the Mexican-American community.

"And I would like to highlight the victory of two people of Mexican origin: the governor-elect of California and the governor-elect of Texas. Both have either a mother and father or one of them born in Mexico; and they have a link to, evidently, their state, their platform, but also a link to Mexican men and women, and it makes us very happy that Mexican-Americans who are over there have this participation and this recognition," she said during her morning press conference.

Becerra, born in Sacramento and of Mexican descent, will be the first Latino elected governor of California; his mother was born in Mexico and his father, although born in Sacramento, grew up in Tijuana. Hinojosa, born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, will be the first Latina to govern Texas, after defeating Republican Greg Abbott.

Both victories carry historic weight in their respective states, though with distinct political trajectories: California will have for the first time a Latino governor elected directly by its voters, while Texas elected its first Latina governor and returned the post to a Democrat after more than three decades.

The election day also shifted the political balance in Washington, where Democrats won control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which will allow them to act as a counterweight to the administration of President Donald Trump during the final two years of his term.
